Costume - Spakenburg
Spakenburg is a little village close to Amersfoort (the Netherlands), situated at the IJsselmeer – formerly the Zuiderzee. It's a village of fishermen of which the inhabitants really stick to the old (unwritten) rules and habits.
I really like the colours from the upper part of the female Sundays’ costume and the extremely silhouette which looks like it's build out of squares.
I investigated the fabrics and accessories and tried to remake them as good as possible, with also adding the use of some modern techniques instead of the old ones. Again I studied the way of living and I experienced the feeling and the appearance of the village. The contrast between sticking to the old (unwritten) rules and habits and the desire to get free of them, led me to designing my 2010/2011 collection "Whatever you think, think the opposite".
